Flamel is a biopharmaceutical company engaged in the development of two unique polymer based delivery systems for medical applications. Flamel's Medusa® nano-encapsulation technology is designed to deliver therapeutic proteins. The Company's lead Medusa® product, Basulin®, a long-acting insulin for the treatment of diabetes, is the first application of this patented delivery system. Basulin® has been tested in Phase II-a clinical trials. Micropump® is a controlled-release technology for the oral administration of small molecules. Genvir, its lead internal product using Micropump® technology, is a controlled-release formulation of acyclovir for the treatment of genital herpes. The company currently has one licensed Micropump® project with GlaxoSmithKline. GSK received approval for COREG CR in the US. Flamel's technologies have also been instrumental in the development of a photochromic eyeglass lens product that was launched by Corning in 1999.
